In addition to staying abreast of all current legal issues related to immigration, AILA South Florida is closely monitoring developments related to the possibility of future immigration reform. AILA South Florida is very proud that a key role is being played by Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who represents Florida’s 25th District.
Rep. Diaz-Balart is among a handful of top Republican lawmakers who are reportedly preparing to present a set of principles outlining how they would like to see the immigration system overhauled. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has not yet taken up the issue of immigration reform, despite the passage last year of a bipartisan bill in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Rep. Diaz-Balart, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (VA), House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (VA) and Chairman of the House Budget Committee Paul Ryan (WI) have been working with House Speaker John Boehner’s office to put forward a Republican proposal for how to tackle the vexing issue of immigration reform in this country.
According to news reports, the House leaders may for the first time endorse legal status for many of the 11 million undocumented immigrants already living and working here in the U.S. The Republican lawmakers are expected to release their document in advance of President Obama’s State of the Union Address on January 28.
AILA South Florida encourages its members and the public to thank Rep. Diaz-Balart for his leadership on the immigration issue. We look forward to the release of the principles document and hope that it will help rekindle efforts to introduce and ultimately pass immigration reform with a road to citizenship.
